Weekly Mil-Tech Update
June 17, 2011 Leave a comment
This weeks updates come at a time when many here in the US are beginning to question the future of NATO and her role. Budget cuts are forcing many members to compromise, such as the UK and France discussing over the sharing of a aircraft carrier to train on.
The Paris airshow will give us a glimpse at several weapons systems. It begins this Monday.
Global Hawk is in a pickle as getting the systems to function as designed are causing serious setbacks. Cost over-runs have caused orders to be slashed. It is a necessary system though, as the F-35 and F-22 are. The more complex the technology becomes, the more complex problems you are going to run into.
Biggest news that has people on the ground in an uproar, is the Marines decision to ditch the M249 SAW and go with a lighter, more accurate weapon. They found this in the German made M27 Infantry Automatic Rifle. The payload will be different however, meaning supressive fire will be used hardly at all with it. It is magazine fed, unlike the SAW which is belt fed and able to fire more rounds before reloading. Accuracy and speed is what we are going to see in the M27 IAR. Some say it is a modern day BAR. I believe it was a right decision and it will make the Marines more mobile and effective.
